General:
Medium to tall shrub, ascending to erect, 1-4 m tall; twigs appressed-hairy.
Leaves:
Alternate, deciduous or semi-evergreen, somewhat leathery, egg-shaped to broadly elliptic, 2-3 cm long, entire, pointed at the tip, dark green and nearly smooth above, paler and sparsely hairy below; stalks 2-4 mm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescences short, small, axillary clusters of 2 to 4 short-stalked flowers; corollas white with red markings or pinkish, the petals 5, erect; calyces appressed-hairy, the 5 lobes triangular; ovaries inferior; stamens about 20.
Fruits:
Berry-like pomes (like miniature apples), egg-shaped, about 8 mm long, orange-red; stones (nutlets) 2 to 5.
